김종구의 작업은 거대한 쇳덩어리를 깎아내는 노동집약적인 행위로부터 시작된다.

작가는 쇳덩어리를 쇳가루로 변형시킴으로써 쇠가 갖고 있던 그 육중함과 공격성을 제거한다. 쇠는 이제 미세한 공기의 흐름에도 반응할 수 있을 만큼 물리적으로 섬세하고 자유로운 형태가 된다.

 

‘쇳가루 산수화’라 불리는 쇳가루 작품은 수성접착제를 흠뻑 적신 광목 위에 작가가 평소에 느껴오는 인간사의 슬픈 내용들을 감성적 시어로 여백의 조화와 쇳가루의 흘러내림, 시간을 통해 쇳가루가 산화 되어지는 과정 등, 詩, 書, 畵의 동양적, 정신성을 의미하는 예술작품이 되고 탈 물질화의 단계로까지 나아가게 되는 것이다.

 

이와 같은 쇠의 변화는 현대 물질문명에 대한 작가의 반성적 사고와 맞닿아 있다.

 

His work begins with the labour- intensive act of grinding steel. The ponderous mass of steel is transformed into light powder which falls calmly on the floor via his protracted grinding. The artist removes the massiveness and aggressiveness from the steel through the transformation of steel from large mass to minute powder.

 

This painting, called Iron Powder Landscape Painting is a delicate work of art that signifies oriental spirits and post-materialism through the beauty of blank space (poem), iron powder letters flowing down (writing), and its oxidation process (painting), which were adopted by an artist to emotionally depict sorrowful human stories he has often felt on cotton cloth soaked in water-based adhesive.

 

The metamorphosis of steel is connected with the artist’s reflection on today’s materialist civilization.
