Selected Bibliography

This lecture series was first offered in the early 80s at Point Park College. Special thanks is due to John Sallis, whose lectures on Heidegger, Plato, and Nietzsche at Duquesne University in the 1970s were an inspiration to all who attended.

The following texts will be helpful in further understanding Heidegger’s work:

Biemel, Walter. Trans. J.L. Mehta. Martin Heidegger: An Illustrated Study. New York: Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich. 1976. This is a concise and very clear overview of Heidegger’s work.

Marx, Werner. Trans. Kisiel and Greene. Heidegger and the Tradition. Evanston: Northwestern University Press. 1971. This book contains an excellent comparison of Aristotle and Heidegger that sheds light on both thinkers.

Fell, Joseph. Heidegger and Sartre: An Essay on Being and Place. New York: Columbia University Press. 1979. Along with providing a good contrast between Heidegger and Sartre, Fell does a fine job with the obscure nature of Heidgger’s later writings.

Sluga, Hans. Heidegger’s Crisis: Philosophy and Politics in Nazi Germany. Cambridge: Harvard Univeristy Press. 1993. This book provides an important historical context for Heidegger’s inexcusable infatuation with Nazi propaganda.
